PROVIDENCE, RI. El pasado 7 de enero en el Marriott Hotel se llevó a cabo el XVI Banquete Anual de Reconocimientos de la fundación Dollars For Scholars de Rhode Island. Tras un programa que inició a las 6 de la tarde y concluyó a las 9 de la noche.

Con la asistencia de autoridades como el Secretario de Estado A. Ralph Mollis; el Alcalde de Providence, David N. Cicilline; El Abogado General, Patrick Lynch; el Congresista en Washington Sheldon Whitehouse; el senador estatal Juan M. Pichardo; además de invitados especiales, patrocinadores de los estudiantes, corporaciones y familiares de los homenajeados.

La entrega de becas es un gran estímulo a estos jóvenes y en esta noche se pudo apreciar el gran interés de Latino Dollars for Scholars (LADO) por sus siglas en Inglés, de continuar con esta labor aun a contra de la situación económica que afecta de algún modo su labor. Se dio reconocimiento al comité de selección de los becados.

Las intervenciones de los jóvenes estuvieron a la altura de los resultados que produce este apoyo a sus esfuerzos por sobresalir y ser parte del mercado profesional.

El discurso del orador de la noche Juan Vásquez, Estudiante de Medicina de Brown University y antiguo recipiente de becas de LADO fue excelente. Narró su historia y la historia de sus padres para abrirse paso en los Estados Unidos. Su padre un inmigrante de Colombia y su madre una estadounidense, le dieron esa dualidad de culturas que hoy son su riqueza. Los obstáculos propios de un joven nacido en Estados Unidos de un hogar multicultural. Esta diversidad es hoy su inspiración para continuar cosechando éxitos en su educación. Sus buenos resultados en la universidad los ha reflejado en su sueño de trabajar por los necesitados.

Ha hecho campañas para que el gobierno introduzca leyes que ayuden a quienes se han quedado sin seguro de salud. Las campañas para mejorar las oportunidades en el área de la salud son su pasión. El inspirador mensaje lo podrán leer en su extensión en www.americanewsne.com

También José Batista, estudiante de Contabilidad de Bryant University, actuó como orador y entregó un mensaje muy motivador que dejó en la audiencia una gran impresión.

José Batista recibió una beca patrocinada por Citizens Bank. Por los 16 años de trabajo en pro de los latinos la fundación ha distribuido más de 250 becas a estudiantes de Rhode Island.

Los estudiantes han usado las becas para asistir a diversas escuelas superiores como: Bently Collage, Boston Collage, Boston University, Brown University, Bryant University, Collage of Holy Cross, Community Collage of Rhode Island, Connecticut Collage, Cornell University, George Washington University, Johnson & Wales University,  Long Island University, Middlebury College, New York University, Northeastern University, Providence College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, University of Pennsylvania, la Universidad de Rhode Island y Worcester Polytechnic Institute. 

La misión de LADO Latino Dollars for Scholars, miembro de “Ascholarship America”, es una organización  sin fines lucrativos fundada en 1993. La misión es extender la educación universitaria entre la población latina residente en Rhode Island; involucrando al sector privado en el apoyo de estos estudiantes. Además, LADO estímula la excelencia en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes latinos. Las metas principales son incrementar la representación latina en la educación superior y brindar ejemplos de liderazgo académico y profesional a nuestra comunidad latina.

La Filosofía: La filosofía de LADO es otorgar el merecido reconocimiento a las personas que se destacan por su liderazgo basado en el esfuerzo y logro personal. A través de esta filosofía, los latinos fomentamos el compromiso y la responsabilidad para obtener la educación necesaria que permitirá la prosperidad y el mejoramiento de nuestra comunidad.

LADO is committed to increasing the Latino presence at the postsecondary education level by creating partnerships with the private sector, providing academic support and resources, and awarding academic scholarships.  Our philosophy is one that focuses on rewarding individual achievements and service to the community. 

Our Mission
Latino Dollars for Scholars Foundation of Rhode Island (LADO) is a private non-profit organization founded in 1993. Our mission is to expand higher education for Latino students living in Rhode Island by involving and assisting the private sector in the support of these students. LADO also provides encouragement for higher levels of achievement among Latino students. Our goals are to increase Latino representation at the post secondary level and to provide the community with academic and professional role models.

Our Board of Directors, Board Members and Scholarship Selection Committee are members of the Rhode Island community who personify our mission of supporting Latino students in their pursuit of higher education.

Our Philosophy
LADO operates under a philosophy that rewards individual effort, leadership and achievement. As a result, Latinos foster a sense of responsibility and commitment for meeting our community's educational need for prosperity and continued upward mobility.

Our Achievements
Within the past twelve years, we have provided over one hundred eighty scholarships to Rhode Island students who have successfully matriculated to post-secondary institutions throughout the United States. Some of the institutions our recipients attend include: Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Bryant University, Community College of Rhode Island, Cornell University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Massachusetts University of Pharmacy, New York University, Northeastern University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Rhode Island.

The Latino Dollars for Scholars Foundation is a chapter of Scholarship America, a recognized tax-exempt charity under Section 501(c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions to LADO are tax-deductible.  You can make a cash donation by submitting your pledge in the form below.  As a Scholarship Sponsor, with a pledge of $1,000 or more, you are underwriting a full LADO scholarship to one deserving young person.  You will receive a personal note of thanks and may have the opportunity to meet your sponsored LADO Scholar at our Annual LADO Scholars Award Banquet or other LADO events.
